I am so excited to share with you the new edition to the Untamed family, my new Industrial serger and sewing machine. The stitches are beautiful and perfect, but oh it can go fast.
Throughout my years at fashion school, I learned to like them, it took me a while but I started to be able to control them and could see the benefit in them when I became good. I have wanted one ever since.
What is a serger?
A serger, or often known as an overlock machine is a type of sewing machine but it has 3-5 bobbins instead of 1 like a regular sewing machine. A serger trims the seam and encloses the seam allowance or edge of the fabric, inside a thread casing all in one step.
Look down at your T-shirt or pants, they have definitely been serged. Sergers are great when working with knit fabrics, but they don't do everything and you still need a sewing machine for topstitching, zippers, buttonholes etc. So I had to buy two machines.
First time on an Industrial Serger
I went to fashion school a complete beginner, I could not even sew in a straight line. 98% of the other students had been sewing their whole lives and then there was me ... “This is why I am here ... teach me”.
I remember the first time on the schools Industrial serger and it was intense, to say the least, they had one speed and it was supersonic fast! I found regular sewing machines fast even in the slow setting, how was I going to make anything with this.
So fast forward a few years and a lot of sewing, it was time to spend some money
I did lots of research (well my boyfriend did lots of research because he is the google of the household haha) and found Peter at Mac1 in Calgary who specializes in industrial machines. He was super helpful and recommended the Reliable 4 thread serger and the reliable straight stitch machine.
I excitedly placed the order and then 2 weeks later I was driving back from Calgary in the Dodge minivan with 2 brand new machines in the back. Jeff and I then spent the next two days cleaning out my studio, reorganizing everything and setting up the machines.
The room was clean for a moment and then sewing starts
I sat down at the new Serger scared whether I would be able to control it or not. I had visions of fashion school 5 years previous, but no need to worry I was a pro haha. I was amazed that I could control its speed.
It has been so exciting seeing the improvements in my sewing over the years. It has been a lot of hours, grey hairs and unpicking threads but it has all been worth it. The constant learning and growing are what I love the most about running a business.
Keep growing everyone, you will get to where you want to be, it just takes time and desire.
I love my new machines, thank you, Peter, for making the process so easy. Check out his website here
