It’s hard running a business, way harder than I had ever imagined. I thought I graduate from fashion school, make pretty things and then sell them … easy, right?
This was the case when there were lots of shows, markets, and festivals around the country to sell my designs at; I had an awesome product, there were lots of people, it was easy to find my ladies searching for long tops. These events are fantastic for up and coming artists because it’s an easy avenue to sell, make contacts, and form a brand, but like most things, you don’t realise how lucky you are to have something until it has been taken away.
I always knew I wanted to move the business online but thought it would be a little down the road once my bank was a little fuller, haha, but alas, a pandemic came, and I had to make changes. I have been doing lots of courses and have learned so much over the winter about website design, SEO’s, backlinks, marketing, and the millions of other things you have to learn to help get seen in the crazy world wide web.
It has been so much fun learning and creating the brand and thinking about what I want the Untamed message to be and represent. A friend said to me yesterday, how do I work so much? And it was simple to answer … because I love it, and I want to make a difference.
Clothing has become disposable. As a result, we generate more and more textile waste, causing the fashion industry to become one of the worst polluters globally, and I want to do my part to change this. I want my customers to feel good about how my designs make them look and feel and feel good about their shopping decision.
The slow fashion movement is making people think about their shopping habits and how their choices affect others and the planet. It encourages the consumer to buy fewer clothes that are higher quality and made to last instead of made to be disposed of after a few uses. Continuing to purchase new clothes will not change your life in any real way, but if we all start switching to slow fashion, the world will truly benefit.
Buy less. Buy better quality. Research. Mend clothes and Reuse.
I have always known I wanted to design clothing for every day, not every season. With all Untamed Collections, we are proud to say that you can wear them all year round. We don't design clothes for a specific season or event; we design clothes that you can wear all year round that fits into your lifestyle.
Moving online has also meant that we only make to order, so yes, your design takes a little longer to get to you, but at least we never have leftover stock that goes into a landfill. Just think over 80% of all clothes brought ends up in a landfill.
I have also been doing a lot of research into the type of fabric I use and where I get it from. I recently found this amazing company called Kendor Textiles in Vancouver, and I love their passion for doing everything they can to help the environment. You can read more about their commitment here https://kendortextiles.com/pages/sustainability.
I am super excited about the direction Untamed is going in. As we grow, we are committed to incorporating more environmentally conscious ways to operate our day-to-day business. We love this beautiful planet, and we want to continually produce cool, functional ethical pieces that are fabulous for you and the environment.
At the moment, I am working hard to figure out ways to use up the scrap pieces of fabric from my designs and thinking of things I can make with them … maybe some funky Untamed cushions are in the cards. I am super excited to see what I can come up with, so watch this space.
Remember I am not saying don’t go shopping because shopping is fun, all I want is for you to think about your shopping habits. Think about why that top is that price and how your decision will affect other people and the planet.
Be kind to yourself, others and the planet because we all deserve some love.
