Work is everywhere, there is no clock in, clock out machine and there is always an email to send or a design to make. Working from home has its benefits, but you have to learn to switch off and actually walk away.
You have to separate work from home. It’s hard, but with me, if I don’t I start to get very grumpy and go a little crazy. A bike ride, a walk or tea and muffin on the deck can make a massive difference to both productivity and mental state.
I feel so lucky
I love the variety in my job. I get to design and make clothes, organize photo shoots, update my website, make social media ads and all the business admin stuff, which is not quite as much fun but you can't have everything right?
It's fun, and a constant learning game but it is an insane amount of work and I have to regularly make sure I take a break. When to stop working is a tough problem and one I hear lots of people struggling with.
Working out is amazing
I quickly found out that working out is essential for my sanity. It feels amazing to switch off the mind and get a good sweat going.
I struggled at the beginning to get motivated to work out from home because work is always right there and would always win. A quick email would always turn into hours on the computer and then things would always pop up all day long and exercise would get pushed to the back.
You just need the right motivation
I found Team Body Project which I absolutely love and would highly recommend for everyone of all ages and abilities. It's an online workout plan with husband and wife Daniel and Alex who are both amazing personal trainers and make each video fun and sweaty.
It’s hard and I love the challenge. Alex and Danielle’s energy and motivation force me to keep on pushing, one more horrid burpy or 5 more star jumps, they are doing it so can I. Some mornings I really try and convince myself that I have too much work to do but I try and always force myself to press play and I never regret it.
The fridge has never been so close and easily accessible as it is when you work from home. You can quickly fall into the trap of picking at unhealthy chips and chocolate all day long. I believe that preparation is the key to eating healthy.
I find that I get so involved with what I am doing and then all of a sudden I am starving and I have to eat now and quickly. So I need to be prepared before this happens. I need to have easy, healthy options quickly accessible otherwise I either eat unhealthily or shout at my boyfriend because I have become hangry!
A big dish of everything delicious
I am a huge fan of making a big dish of veggies and a protein (meat, beans, chickpeas, lentils) in a yummy sauce, whatever I fancy. Then when you are ready to eat you can have it on its own, add quinoa, potatoes, pasta, rice, wilted spinach or a fried egg (my favourite). This way it’s quick but will taste different each time.
Snacks are essential for when you have been staring at the computer with a blank look on your face and you need a boost. My go-to is hummus and snap peas, crackers and cream cheese, almonds and berries.
Value your time
I believe if you want your business to succeed you need to keep healthy, workout, eat well and take time off. Pick a day, an afternoon and stick to it. Look after you first and the business will follow.
It is important for me and my relationships to both my boyfriend, friends and family that I pull myself away from Untamed. I still struggle to find the right combination of Emma time, relationship time and work. It’s a constant mental battle. But it is essential to me and the business.
Work hard, play hard and look after yourself, you deserve it. Time is precious and every moment only comes once. You can do it all, it might just take you a little longer.
