Pros and Cons of the fabric I use.

I have chosen to use Tencel, which is man-made and originates from trees—primarily birch, beech, spruce, and eucalyptus—that are then manufactured into fibre. It is a fantastic eco-friendly fabric made from wood pulp cellulose fibres. It is durable enough for everyday use, making it a long-lasting investment for stylish and sustainable clothing.

It delivers quality, performance, and versatility while also being great for the environment. 99% of the chemicals and solvents used to break down the wood pulp are recovered and recycled. Biodegradable and compostable, the Tencel fibres can fully revert back to nature, not causing further waste.

Tencel fabrics are a fantastic eco-friendly option for my designs. They are super soft, breathable, wick away moisture, durable, and wash amazing—perfect for my style. However, they also use less water and chemicals in the manufacturing process, which is a win-win for you and the planet.

“By choosing TENCEL, you’re not just purchasing a piece of clothing; you’re contributing to a greener future and redefining the value of your fashion choices.” TENCEL™ website.

Benefits for the environment…

  • It requires a lot less dye than cotton.
  • When produced, it is pure white, so no bleaching is necessary, and undyed is always an option.
  • A closed-loop solvent system means almost no solvent is dumped into the ecosystem. Instead, it is recycled repeatedly to produce new fibres and minimize harmful waste.
  • It recycles the process water.
  • In production, TENCEL requires less energy and water than conventional cotton.
  • Eucalyptus trees grow quickly without pesticides, fertilizers, or irrigation and are 100% biodegradable.
  • However, the technology used in processing makes the fabric cost more to produce

The benefits for you

  • It is exquisitely soft and pleasant to the skin, and long-lasting.
  • Brilliant in colour and lustre. It holds dye well, making vibrant colours.
  • It’s more breathable and less susceptible to odorous bacteria growth than environmentally damaging synthetics. This fabric is ideal for activewear, perfect for a sweaty gym or hot yoga session.
  • Their unique physical properties lead to their high tenacity profile, gentleness on the skin, and good moisture management.
  • It has an excellent drape and doesn’t wrinkle easily.
  • It's breathable and manages moisture, so it helps regulate temperature.
  • Strong and durable, this fabric holds its shape over time and is shrink-proof, meaning it maintains its shape and size after washing.
  • TENCEL's inherent resilience ensures that your clothing will withstand the test of time, reducing the need for frequent replacements

With continued recognition and commitment to the importance of sustainability, Tencel has the potential to hold a significant place in the future of fashion.

From many viewpoints, there is little reason that Tencel shouldn’t replace other fabrics in various clothing items. Its versatility, durability, soft and lustrous feel, and lighter carbon footprint definitely help to promote Tencel.

With an increased demand for the fashion industry to adopt environmentally friendly practices, Tencel's production capacity may expand, opening up possibilities for it to become an increasingly central fabric.

Proper care is essential for helping your TENCEL garments last as long as possible. Fortunately, keeping TENCEL in top condition is easy from the Tencel website.

Washing: machine wash on a gentle cycle using cold water.

Drying: Whenever possible, opt for air drying. If using a dryer, select a low heat setting to prevent excessive shrinkage or damage to the fibres.
