Untamed Artist: Brianne Chisholm
Posted by EMMA STEVENS
My name is Brianne Chisholm, I'm 34 and the creator of B. AYNSLEY Art.
I grew up in rural small-town Saskatchewan originally, and for anyone that has been there will know there's not a lot of excitement happening, so from an early age I always had a paintbrush in hand. As soon as I was old enough I took off to the liberal and vibrant city of Victoria, British Columbia.
In my nearly 10 years of living on the island, I went to school, got a “real” job, forgot that I had the ability and passion for art, and realized that I wanted that creativity back. Soon after I decided to drop out of life, pick up a job at a local art supply store, and volunteer with a local not for profit gallery. I became a sponge for the creative world, and what better place to explore the arts than living among the colorful characters that loved it all as much as I did.
I've always been more pensive and observant of the world around me, to the point where I have been told that I ask too many questions and that I'd make a great lawyer. Right... But I also believe that when the curiosity dies, so does a meaningful life. It's important to me that I forge my own path, by my own terms. Visual art is my medium to learn, explore, narrate and express the world around me. It has always been my way of observing and learning about my place on this earth, and how can I make it better. Conclusions are always drawn down to just doing my part. This is great, yes, we all should do our part. But how can I do more? The answer, it seems, is simply to provide information to those that choose to listen. Information for other curious people that decide to undertake a carving of their own path with as much knowledge as they can absorb. The only way I know how to do this is through visual art. Through this process I often spend hours of research on a piece, looking into symbolism, narratives, human connections between individuals, and other anthropogenic effects humans have on the environment.
These values dictate so much of who I am and where I am choosing to go. This is exactly why I am thrilled to be collaborating with Untamed Fernie. There is a direct alignment with our values and the realization that by forging ahead on our own path in a collective way, we are directly and positively contributing to this incredible community. More importantly, we are able to share in the opportunity and the ripple effect of individuals that are all paving the way for living a more authentic and fulfilled life.
I am so stoked to be able to share my curiosities and passions through a new medium while still being able to support a local entrepreneur in their passion. As I work toward a solo gallery exhibit at the Fernie Arts Station in the summer of 2021, Untamed and I are working together to find more ways to contribute. Stay tuned!
