“Why are we so hard on ourselves?”
Posted by EMMA STEVENS

As you can see on my website and Instagram, all my models have very different looks and body shapes. I love how my designs look so flattering on various ladies, and one of my favourite things to hear is, "Wow, look at my waist" or "My bum looks amazing." It certainly makes my job worthwhile.
For the shoots I have done in Calgary, I have used a modelling agency called Nuna Models, and I have always been impressed with their selection of models and how they care about their models and their clients.
Unfortunately, even in 2024, it remains a significant challenge to discover models who embody a healthy and natural appearance. Witnessing how societal standards influence our perceptions can be overwhelming, especially regarding the appreciation and acceptance of women of diverse shapes and sizes.
The intense scrutiny over women's bodies and lifestyle choices can be so disheartening and overwhelming. This ongoing pressure often leads to a narrow definition of what is acceptable or desirable, overshadowing each person's unique qualities.
I remember one of my models telling me how they went for an interview and got told she needed to lose two cm from her hips. Yes, this was in 2019. She was hot and healthy and looked great, but this affected her confidence, as you can imagine. She was wearing a size small on my website.
We need to normalize the process of finding the proper health framework and lifestyle for our body type and age. We must be open to change and personal growth. We must embrace our bodies as they are and learn to make healthy living enjoyable.
We should stop comparing ourselves to others, avoid extreme dieting and health fads, and instead find an eating pattern and lifestyle that works for us most of the time (with the occasional piece of cake when desired).
It just makes me mad that people are still striving for an unhealthy image of beauty. Let’s have fun—working out, eating healthy, and being outside with those weirdos we love.
I hope you love what you do or at least love the direction you are going in, and remember, skinny isn't sexy; Confidence is.
